Historical background - Formation of an Agency
The idea of introducing co-operative insurance in Kenya was first conceived early in 1968 by the Kenya National Federation of Co-operatives (KNFC). After further consultations, it became necessary to form and Insurance Agency which was started in 1972. This led to the registration of a Co-operative Insurance Society of Kenya on 18th November 1975, under the Co-operative Societies Act CAP 490.

In 1978, the Society was incorporated and licensed as insurance company under the Companies Act, thus changing its name to Co-operative Insurance Services Limited (CIS) and began its business in December 1978.

Thirty year development Staff
The staff has grown from the original four, inherited from the Insurance Agency in December, 1978, to the present 257. Physical Expansion CIS had its humble beginnings, as an Agency at Wakulima House, Nairobi, moved to Ufundi House (formerly known as Gateway House), in January, 1979.
September, 1980, CIS moved to Co-operative House.
In 1991, CIS moved to View Park Towers.
In November 1996 CIS moved to Bima House. 

THE CO-OPERATIVE INSURANCE COMPANY OF KENYA (CIC) LIMITED
In February 1999, after twenty years in operation, the company name was changed to "THE CO-OPERATIVE INSURANCE COMPANY OF KENYA (CIC) LIMITED"
In 2004 the company moved its offices to its own ultra modern office complex at Upper Hill along Mara road.

CIC INSURANCE GROUP LIMITED
In 19th October 2010, the Co-operative Insurance Company of Kenya (CIC) Limited changed name to CIC Insurance Group Limited as it comprised CIC Asset Management Limited as well as CIC Insurance. CIC Insurance Group is in the process of building another 10 Storey -Twin tower building at Upper Hill along Mara road.
