PERSONAL AND GROUP PERSONAL ACCIDENT Personal accident insurance provides benefits in the event of death or disablement resulting from an accident, which must have an external, violent and visible cause. A fixed benefit amount is paid to the person insured in the case of loss of sight, hearing, speech, dismemberment or paralysis resulting from an accident. In the event of death, benefits are paid to a beneficiary or legal personal representative. The personal accident insurance also covers medical expenses from an accident. Why do I need a personal accident insurance cover? What would you do if you were not insured and permanently lost a limb or your sight? How much time would you lose at work? Would you be able to remain in your job or at your current income level? If that injury resulted in your death, how would your loved ones be affected? The financial and emotional costs resulting from accidents are quite devastating and, hence, the need to take out a personal accident insurance cover which offers affordable protection to help individuals and family members deal with associated financial loss. Road accidents, for example, are a major cause of disability and death in Kenya. Reports from the Kenya Police show that in 2004, there were 225 fatalities, 1745 serious injuries and 11,877 slight injuries from reported road traffic accidents alone. It is estimated that half of trauma admissions to hospitals are as a result of road traffic accidents. Work Injury Benefits Insurance This is a cover required as per the work injury benefits Act (2007). The act requires compulsory insurance for all employees.
